the situation

  • In recognition of International Women’s Day, #pressforprogress, the WFA launched the first

    in a series of workshops which focuses on enhancing positive relations within academia.

  • To raise the level of consciousness for gender equality and eliminating the barriers to success

  • To motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.

the solution

  • To raise awareness of unconscious bias, the different forms of bias and how it manifests. 

  • Discuss the impact of unconscious bias in academia and how it impacts research, studies and collaboration.

  • Deliver a gender-neutral workshop, to educate male professors on the negative impact of unconscious bias

the workshop included:

  • What is ”Unconscious Bias” and how to pivot to “Conscious Decision Making”

  • Interactive exercises to create greater awareness of Unconscious Bias

  • Case study discussions regarding academia related Unconscious Bias

  • Conscious decision-making for “systems and process” to build an inclusive culture

  • Group coaching session to stimulation discussion and how to integrate ”Conscious Decision Making”

the outcomes

  • Provided practical tools and techniques to create actionable behaviours.

  • Highlighted inclusion is the responsibility of everyone in the faculty.

  • Developed confidence in participants to have courageous conversations.
